Signs Your Child Needs To See an Eye Doctor

Common Signs Your Child Needs To See an Eye Doctor

Table of Contents

Children need special attention during their early years. They’re still developing, which means they’re vulnerable to health problems. One significant area of concern is their vision.

Eye health is crucial to your child’s success in school as well as their overall well-being and physical development. A comprehensive checkup with an eye doctor identifies potential issues, allowing timely intervention that ensures your child’s comfort and safety from vision problems.

How do you know when to schedule an appointment with an eye doctor in Dubai?

Pay attention to the following signs of eye discomfort, developmental delays, and changes in behaviour.

Visual Tracking Issues

When your child can follow an object, left to right, up and down or in circles, without moving their head, they have good visual tracking. Babies develop this ability at around two to three weeks when tracking faces and at six months when shifting from one object to another.

As your child grows up, good visual tracking allows them to read and comprehend well in school. If your child has trouble following words or objects, take them to an eye doctor.

Pain and Discomfort

Children are, by nature, rambunctious. Accidents are likely to happen, which can result in eye injuries. If your child has been experiencing pain and discomfort or talks about difficulty seeing, an eye exam is a must. Pain or discomfort could be a sign of infection, and the vision problem could indicate head trauma.

Headaches

When the eyes work excessively to perform a task, eye strain follows. In some cases, headaches occur. If your child suffers from eyestrain and headaches, they could have astigmatism, myopia (nearsightedness), or hyperopia (farsightedness)

Your eye doctor may recommend the laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) procedure. Lasik eye surgery in Dubai is a quick and innovative way to correct vision problems like hyperopia, myopia (nearsightedness), or astigmatism.

Light Sensitivity

Some children develop a sensitivity to light or photophobia because they may have conjunctivitis or corneal damage. In some cases, photophobia could be a symptom of more serious conditions, such as meningitis, photosensitivity epilepsy, and developmental and sensory disorders.

When your child shows sensitivity to light along with red, watery eyes, nausea, and headaches, take them to the eye doctor.

Squinting

If you notice your child squinting frequently, it could be a sign of vision problems. Squinting is a natural way for the eyes to focus better and reduce blurriness. However, consistent squinting may signal underlying issues like refractive errors, such as myopia or hyperopia.

Challenges in School

Poor vision can affect your child’s performance in school. If your child struggles to see the board, has difficulty reading, or frequently loses their place while reading, these could be signs that their vision needs to be checked.

Pay attention to complaints about double vision or blurred vision, as these are also indicators that an eye exam is necessary.

What Are Some Common Childhood Eye Conditions?

Several eye conditions can affect children. Understanding these can help you identify symptoms and seek appropriate treatment.

Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)

Lazy eye happens when one eye is stronger than the other, leading the brain to favor the stronger eye. This condition can develop when a child receives no treatment for strabismus (misaligned eyes), droopy eyelids, or refractive errors. Symptoms include poor depth perception, squinting, or closing one eye to see better.

Strabismus (Crossed Eyes)

Strabismus is when the eyes do not align properly and point in different directions. One eye may turn in, out, up, or down, while the other eye looks straight ahead. This misalignment can be constant or intermittent. Symptoms include double vision, difficulty judging distances, and misaligned eyes. Early treatment is essential to prevent amblyopia.

Refractive Errors

Refractive errors, including myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism, are common in children. These vision problems develop when the eye’s shape leads the light to focus beyond the retina. Symptoms include blurred vision, headaches, eyestrain, and difficulty reading or seeing distant objects.

Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)

Conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the conjunctiva, which is the clear tissue that lines the eyelid and eyeball. Bacteria, viruses, allergies, or irritants can cause this eye condition. Symptoms include redness, itching, tearing, and discharge from the eyes. Although conjunctivitis is usually mild, it can be contagious and requires proper treatment to prevent spreading.

Ptosis (Drooping Eyelid)

Ptosis is when one of both upper eyelids droops, and partially or completely covers the eye. This condition can affect vision development and may require surgical intervention if it interferes with sight. Symptoms include a drooping eyelid, tilting the head to see better, and difficulty keeping the eyes open.

Your child’s eye health is crucial for their overall development and well-being. Ensure your child maintains good vision and thrives in their daily activities by being vigilant and addressing signs of vision problems promptly. Eye exams are critical to this process, providing the necessary care and intervention to keep your child’s eyes healthy and functioning optimally.
